Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Testing

What is a VOC?

VOC is an acronym for Volatile Organic Compound which in laymans terms means a compound(a substance made up of two or more elements) that vaporizes spontaneously at a certain temperature and pressure of the surrounding atmosphere.

VOCs are most commonly recognized as the off-gassing created by new products, solvents, fragrances, smoke, building materials, photo copiers, etc.

Common VOCs

  • Formaldehyde
  • Benzene
  • Toluene
  • Xylene
  • Acetone
  • Methylene Chloride
  • Styrene
  • Limonene
  • Ethanol
  • Isopropanol

While it is nearly impossible to eliminate all VOCs in the indoor environment there are steps that can be taken to reduce the effects and sensitivities caused by VOCs.

More information about household products can be found at The National Library of Medicine.
